Real Madrid star and World Best Player Of The Year, Cristiano Ronaldo showed he's one of the greatest of all time as he started the 2018 World Cup tournament by breaking records.
The Portuguese national team captain scored a brilliant hat-trick yesterday in their opening game against Spain, which ended in a 3- 3 draw between the nations. The goals made him the first player ever to score in 8 major international tournaments.
It was one of those matches in which every goal changed the balance of power. Portugal scored first, Spain drew level; Portugal then led again, Spain equalised; Spain took the lead, Portugal pulled it back. Six goals, six swings. If this is repeated as the final next month, no-one will complain. Heavyweight title fights get rematches; why not this?
He's the oldest hat-trick scorer in World Cup history, aged 33 years and 130 days – the previous oldest was Rob Rensenbrink in June 1978 for the Netherlands against Iran (30y 335d).
It's also on record that Ronaldo is the fourth player to score in four different World Cup tournaments - 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 - after Pele, Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose.
